Carol Coates has been a pioneer in combining traditional and digital media. Her humanistic work focuses on issues of perception and choice. Her three lifelong series come from a craving for wisdom and justice and a desire for understanding. The Contact Series considers our moment-to-moment choices in relationships. The Dissonance Series presents characters in strange situations and asks viewers how they might interpret and respond to that moment. The MindsEye Series asks how we see and judge others. Our judgments often take less than a nanosecond. How accurate, informed, and wise are they? How guided by fear? How warped by belief and expectation? While her current work is narrative, her command of media and her ability to use line, form, value, texture, and color also inform strong minimal abstractions inspired by nature. Coates is also an accomplished fine art installation specialist. She works with architects, designers, and engineers to create and install custom work for corporate, public, and private clients. She is represented in Denver, Los Angeles, and Santa Fe.
