About Gifford Ewing Photography
Gifford Ewing, a professional photographer since 1970, started his career as a photojournalist in Altus, Oklahoma. In 1972, he opened Gifford Ewing Photography in Denver, Colorado, earning the reputation as one of the region’s finest architectural and commercial advertising photographers. Intrigued by landscapes as an artform, Ewing returned to the work he loves in 1988, creating black and white images from the unique patterns and changing light of the American vista.
Based in Denver, Gifford now specializes in fine-art black and white photography only, using a Deardorff field camera. "I enjoy the more traditional photographic methods in my work. They serve the purity and natural beauty of the landscape. I capture most of my images in black and white with a 5x7 Deardorff wooden field camera using the zone system for exposure. I develop and print all images using archival silver gelatin paper finishing them in selenium to bring out the richness and increase the archival qualities."
Gifford’s images capture landscapes worldwide with a strong focus on the state of Maine and the West. Ewing's portfolio includes central grasslands, the Rocky Mountains, deserts and numerous National Parks, including Acadia NP, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Yellowstone, Great Sand Dunes NP, and Death Valley and more. He also documents urban landscapes and architecture throughout the Denver area including exclusive images of the Union Station transformation unveiled in July 2014.
Ewing’s work has been chosen to be part of the decor at Hyatt, Marriott, Westin, and Residence Inn hotels, and is part of the permanent collection of the Denver Art Museum. He is also exhibited in numerous corporate, public and private collections throughout the world.
Gifford’s commitment to the environment and charitable causes is evidenced through his work with numerous non-profit organizations, including frequent donations of his fine art photography to fundraising auctions such as ARTMA, an organization that supports pediatric oncology research at the Denver Children’s Hospital.
