Blank Canvas 38 prints once per year and is the only guide of its kind. We publish a newsletter once per quarter, giving you the latest events, exhibitions, news, and editorial concerning the Colorado art scene.

Managing/Content Editor

Blank Canvas 38 is seeking a Managing/Content Editor for its print and digital product. We’re looking for a highly motivated, highly organized content editor to manage our writers, edit content and help us grow our product. The right candidate will exhibit strong leadership, communication, and print and digital management skills, as well as be fluent in the latest media trends.

 

Job Requirements

Collaborate with the Publisher to plan, research, and schedule engaging articles. Oversee all print and digital content. Work with freelance writers to assign articles and coordinate photos and serve as project manager for the process. Copyedit all incoming copy. Write and edit print and digital articles, as well as edit all sales and marketing copy and newsletter content. Identify and secure high-level cover subjects. Manage editorial calendar. Ensure all copy is error-free and engaging. Proof magazine prior to print. Oversee and manage editorial interns. Vet sponsored content and write content, as needed. Track traffic trends and analytics and conceive and implement traffic-boosting content ideas to create an upward trend in the number of visitors to the website. Use social media and SEO to draw attention to articles. Attend Blank Canvas 38 Events and possibly some Networking Events. Be active in the Colorado Art Scene. Identify possible partnerships and sponsorships, and relay them to the Publisher. Be trustworthy and use extremely good judgment concerning confidentiality. Other duties as needed.

Education and Experience

Minimum 5-years of editorial experience. Bachelors’ Degree is preferred but not necessary with sufficient experience. Strong writing and proofreading skills. Strong knowledge of AP style. Ability to coach and mentor diverse writers. Experienced with Microsoft Word and Excel. Familiarity with SEO and various digital platforms. Sound decision-making skills. Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills, and the ability to work independently and as a team. Knowledge of media trends. Proficiency in English. Attention to detail. Excellent communication skills. Ability to prioritize, multitask, and keep to publishing deadlines.

 

Salary Details

Salary: $4,500 per issue.

Supplemental pay is possible with extra written print and website articles and editing.

Job Type: Freelance, 1099, 1 issue per year.

Freelance Writers

Blank Canvas 38 is seeking Freelance Writers to join our team. Working directly with the Managing/Content Editor and Publisher of Blank Canvas 38, the Freelance Writers will share responsibilities of line editing and writing stories from short briefs to long-form features on an issue to issue basis.

Job Requirements

All freelance writers must live in Colorado due to local events, exhibitions, and news coverage in the Colorado Arts Scene. Must have a strong grasp of the English language, including sentence structure, grammar, syntax and proper punctuation. Excellent vocabulary used to enhance their writing and make their writing more engaging or informative. Must be highly creative, develop basic ideas and concepts into a fully formed piece of content. Must be perceptive and good at close reading, able to interpret style guides and follow client instructions closely. Adept at accepting and applying criticism to refine their work and have a progress-oriented mindset where they aim to develop their writing strategies. Must be extremely detail-oriented, organized, and deadline-driven. Able to manage multiple departmental responsibilities while working with staff at all levels and varying personalities. Able to work closely and confidently with the Publisher, Creative Design Director, Managing/Content Editor, Photographers, and other Freelance Writers. Able to work under pressure and time constraints. Experience and knowledge of advertising, publishing, and the Colorado Cultural Arts community is preferred. Excellent communication and people skills and the ability to consistently work well with internal staff and outside contacts. Able to anticipate needs and show initiative. Trustworthy and extremely good judgment concerning confidentiality. Strong word processing and spreadsheet skills and thorough knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Gmail required.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree is preferred but not necessary when having 3+ years of writing experience.

Salary Details

We pay a flat $100 per page written for most editorial. News items and other short editorials pay $50 to $75 each. Online editorial pays $50 to $75 each. Most of our main features, interviews and articles are four-pages long. There is room for the freelance writer to have multiple articles in one issue. These are 1099 positions. We will not provide a 1099 if you are paid under $600.
